Understanding Wireless Network Technology
Wireless communication is the transmission of data between two or more locations that don’t use an electric conductor to carry out the transmission. In some cases the most commonly used wireless technology use radio waves as the mode of transfer. Radio waves are not only used in communications, but in photography and television reception also. This form of wireless connection has become more popular over recent years.
One of the main characteristics of any wireless technology is the use of radio signals. Radio signals are signals that can travel long distances with no interference. These signals are picked up by receivers all over the world with the aid of communications satellites and other devices that receive and decode these signals. Some wireless devices make use of the Global Standard of Mobile communication (GSM) system, which uses radio signals to transmit signals. Other wireless devices make use of the Global System for Mobile Information Communication (GSM-I), which operates in the GSM format and has become the de facto standard in Europe.
Another feature of many wireless devices today is their mobility. Most newer models have built in the ability to connect to networks from other wireless devices and to access local networks through wireless access points. This feature makes it possible for a mobile device to connect to a desktop computer without the need to reconfigure the access point settings on the desktop. It also allows a user to access wireless web services from a variety of locations.
However, one of the biggest drawbacks of wireless networking is the use of radio frequencies. Radio frequency (RF) waves are invisible to the human eye and cannot be blocked by objects such as walls or trees. As such, there is always a possibility that a radio signal can be blocked. This can easily happen if a wireless router is situated in the line of sight of a building or in an enclosed or very compact space. This is especially true for condos and apartments, which do not allow for easy blocking of wireless signals by surrounding walls and foliage. In addition, the use of cell phones and other wireless devices within the range of a wireless network can also result in interference with the signals being sent out by the router.
There are a number of solutions which reduce or eliminate this problem. The most popular one is called wireless local area network (WLAN). A wireless local area network uses radio waves to transmit data instead of the conventional electrical signals used by wireless networks. The advantage of wireless local area networks is that the signals are stronger and do not get blocked by obstructions such as walls or trees.
With a typical WLAN, the data transmitted is in the form of binary codes. This allows computers and other wireless devices to understand the data and use it accordingly. For instance, to send a text message, one would use a cellular phone with an appropriate application and keypad. With a WLAN, one would send the message to a computer with a computer which has a WLAN card and a software program installed on it. This WLAN is usually a router, which aids in the transmission of the wireless networks.
Another option to avoid interference from wireless networks is called Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is a wireless technology, like the wireless networks, which uses radio signals to transmit signals. These signals can be picked up easily by electronic devices, such as laptops, net books or mobile phones, with compatible cards installed. These devices are called Wi-Fi enabled devices, and their connection to the internet is made possible through wireless cards installed in them.
Bluetooth is another wireless technology commonly used to communicate between electronic devices. A Bluetooth transmitter connects two or more electronic devices to each other, thereby allowing them to exchange data. Bluetooth wireless technology is similar to the wireless personal area network, except that Bluetooth devices do not require a physical connection to any wireless network. Thus, when using a Bluetooth headset, it does not need to stay within its range to function. The range of Bluetooth devices is generally between thirty and twenty-five feet.
