Bill Gates is a legendary Internet entrepreneur, computer engineer, philanthropist, and investor. As the founder and CEO of Microsoft, he is one of the most well-known individuals in the computer industry. Gates was born and raised in a small town in Seattle, Washington. When he was a young boy, his family relied upon a food stamp program that was supported by the federal government in order to send him and his brother to school.
Gates attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in math. It was while attending college that Gates wrote his first computer program, which was used by his grandmother during the summers. A year later, Gates received his Bachelor of Science degree from Harvard University in computer engineering. While at Harvard he continued to work on various computer projects, including working as an assistant professor at the university’s Artificial Intelligence Lab.
Bill Gates was named as one of the “Thirty Most Important People of the Decade” by the US Business and Education magazine. He currently serves as co-chairman for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a nonprofit organization that he created with his wife in the late 1990s. Gates is also an active philanthropic member of the International Student Association and the alumni association for Harvard University. As a result of his philanthropy, the school awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award.
