What Are Types of Thermometers?
A thermometer is a mechanical device that accurately measures an internal temperature change. A thermometer usually has at least two important components: a thermocouple, which measure a change in internal temperature; and a means of transforming that change into an electrical signal, which is interpreted by the microchip on the other end. There are several different types of thermometers and their measurements. There is the mechanical thermometer, which is comprised mainly of a glass ball with a surface on the bottom through which a thermometer can be used. There is also a probe thermometer that has a strip of glass or plastic on its base that detects changes in temperature with the help of heat-sensing mechanism.
There are thermometers that use mercury and glass balls that can be varied in temperature. The glass ball determines the current temperature. The mercury ball shows the final temperature after waiting for maximum and minimum temperatures. There are some thermometers that have a digital display screen and a backlight.
Another thermometer that can be used is an electronic contact thermometer, which can be used to measure temperatures. These thermometers employ an electronic contact that has a probe that is placed on the metals that the thermometer measures. The temperature difference between the contacts is read as the temperature difference between the two metals. These types of thermometers are operated with the help of a computer and have a wide operational range.
Tympanic thermometers are another variety that is used. These thermometers use an external heating source such as the heating coil to generate an electric field that is felt through the outer part of the thermometer’s casing. The temperature inside the thermometer changes due to the variation in the temperature of the heating coil.
Tympanic thermometers are available in various designs. Some of the thermometers in the market have a dial that can be easily set for specific temperatures. Other thermometers have a timer that can be programmed to provide an accurate reading of the temperature. There are some thermometers that are manual and can be used to measure the temperature by gently pushing a handle for a few seconds. Most mercury thermometers have an integrated automatic shut off function that prevents overheating from developing.
A mercury thermometer usually has a black mercury container that houses a sensor to detect changes in temperature. The sensor measures the temperature and the mercury container is colored to show the temperature change. The thermometer displays the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and sometimes in degrees Celsius. This feature makes it easier for the user to measure temperature by simply using the finger or stylus.
Oral thermometers are also used to measure the oral temperature of individuals. These thermometers are called discrete thermometers because they can be easily concealed within a pen or other writing instrument. They are designed with a sensor that can detect a subtle change in temperature. When this occurs, it registers the change and computes the average temperature. This is useful when cooking or doing other types of sensitive tasks such as welding or soldering. The discrete thermometers also come in different designs to meet specific consumer needs.
The last type of thermometer used to monitor temperatures is the temporal artery thermometer. This thermometer comes with an integrated probe that can detect changes in temperatures over a wide area. It is best used for monitoring and measuring temperature over extended distances such as rooms, buildings or entire buildings.
All thermometers are powered either by electricity, batteries or by mechanical power. However, most use batteries. The mercury based thermometers are powered by mercury that is stored within a glass tube. This glass tube can either be inserted into an outlet or carried around by the user. When a measurement is taken, the mercury will release mercury into the air.
While all thermometers can be used for monitoring oral temperatures, not all are capable of measuring these temperatures. Some thermometers can only measure temperatures on one side, while others have two different readings for the same side. There are also a few thermometers that have a contact thermometer incorporated with them. When the mercury contacts the sensor, the thermometer measures the temperature. Some thermometers have a probe with two different ends, while others have only one.
Some thermometers come in handy during the medical field. Since these thermometers are very reliable, they can be used to diagnose conditions and diseases. There are a few thermometers that have a mercury cartridge and have a small opening for inserting a test strip to determine the body temperature. This is a very convenient and inexpensive way to measure body temperatures and can be found at most drug stores and office supply stores.
