Advantages of Milling Machine
Milling Machine is an industrial machine tool which is used to eliminate the unwanted material from irregular and flat surfaces. Mostly it is used to make gears. The different types of machine tools available are belt, chain, drilling, polishing, and turning. So in this article let us start by the definition of Milling Machine.

This machine is basically used for cutting, lengthening, and grinding and is usually a vertical machine. In a horizontal milling operation the metal work is moved horizontally in a lathe. The main benefit of using this machine is that you can perform other operations as well as knurling, cutting, drilling etc. with this machine.
In a vertical milling machine the work is positioned on a vertical spindle. The metal work is cut in desired cutting direction using moving cutting tool on the spindle. The two types of machines are; ball mills and rotary mills. Ball Mills operates with cutting tool on one side and rotating cutter on the other side. Rotary Mills operate with cutter on the front side and moving cutting tool on backside.
The milling machine mainly performs two kinds of operations. One is ball milling operation where material is fed through a die and shaped on the spindle. The other operation is circular milling operation where cylindrical material is fed through the die. The material will be removed on the front side of the die and the cylindrical material will be removed on the back side of the die.
A multipoint cutter is included in the milling machine that provides greater accuracy and speed during any type of machining operation. Multioint cutter has an adaptor called arbor. The arbor adaptor prevents misalignment of workpiece during any operation. In addition, this adaptor helps to prevent jamming of spindle arm due to overlapping of spindles. The arbor will also help in providing more accurate and fast turning speeds.
Although there are many advantages of this machine tool, it also has some disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages are; it is more difficult to work on irregular surfaces such as curved and knurled edges. Moreover, the noise created during its operation can be loud and disturbing.
On the other hand, CNC milling machines are more advantageous because they can work on any type of surface finish including polished metal. They can cut hard and soft metals as well as glass and other softer materials. These types of machines use different machining techniques that include; sand blasting, abrasive jetting and robotic welding. With this capability of CNC machines, you will definitely get the best result for your production.
However, in order to obtain the best results, you should have a good material for your workpiece. You may use carbon fiber, aluminum and steel for your milling operation. If you want your machines to perform accurately, you need to start the cutting process by using the appropriate blade for your material. There are three types of blades for your milling equipment namely, direct run, alternating Current (AC) and pulsating Current (PVC). All these three have their own advantages and disadvantages.
If you have a large workpiece to mill, then it is advisable to go for a high-speed cutter. This type of cutter is the ideal solution for large operations. Moreover, the high speed machine also has the ability to perform deep cuts that can be easily achieved with a regular hand held cutter. However, if your workplace has limited areas or you cannot afford to purchase a high speed cutter, you may opt for a portable milling machine. Portable machines are cheaper and less expensive and they are useful for most home applications.
