    System Administration Jobs

system administrationSystem administration refers to the administrative management of one or more network hardware and software systems. The administrator manages the overall operation of a computer network from its central control station (CCS) to its details servers. The administrator can provide services like file, print, and control access to users through file servers, mail servers, and other devices. The administrator also organizes and controls the computer systems of the entire network, and maintains their configuration.

Some small businesses operate without any form of system administration, since the owner maintains all hardware and software and trusts people to perform these functions. Small business owners can delegate most of their network administration duties to employees, though some still retain the responsibility for system maintenance. In large companies, system administration is usually done by senior network administrators who are usually trained for this profession. In larger organizations, there are also specialized positions for this purpose, such as a network administrator, support staff, or a computer repair technician.

The major responsibility of a system administrator is system management, which includes maintenance of hardware and firmware, installation of new hardware and firmware, provisioning of memory and storage devices, installation of application software, and configuration of user accounts. A thorough understanding of hardware and networking considerations is required for this position. System administration professionals must have sound knowledge in routing, memory, storage, bandwidth, security, and configuration of internal components. They must be adept at troubleshooting problems that might occur during normal operations. System administrators must also have good verbal and written communication skills.

One of the major responsibilities of a system administrator is hardware maintenance. He or she must ensure that all necessary hardware is in good working condition, including servers, workstations, routers, printers, computer servers, and other relevant computer equipment. If any hardware is not functioning properly, then it may need to be replaced. The administrator must also keep up with advancements in technology. This requires being knowledgeable about new hardware, software, and peripherals, and being able to upgrade these items whenever necessary.

In today’s information technology world, system administration professionals play a crucial role. One of the key roles they perform is designing and maintaining the computer system. They are responsible for the proper installation of hardware devices such as computers and telecommunications equipment. They maintain the proper working conditions for servers, networks, and other information technology systems. They are even directly involved in the maintenance of the company’s network infrastructure.

Some of the tasks system administrators usually perform include assisting the planning and development of network infrastructure; training users in the use of computer systems; designing and maintaining hardware configurations; and assigning user accounts for network services and applications. They also prepare reports concerning hardware, operating systems, security measures, and system maintenance activities. They also play an important role in the provision of additional hardware and software, and coordinate with other staff members such as network designers and consultants. They must be aware of all the hardware that is placed on the network and perform routine maintenance and servicing on the various computer systems used by the company.

If the company utilizes network hardware and other data servers, a system administrator may also handle the design and maintenance of these hardware components. For instance, if the company uses Cisco hardware for its computers and other hardware devices, then a system administrator may be responsible for the design and installation of these components. He or she may also be in charge of troubleshooting and fixing hardware that fails within the company’s network. In some cases, the system administrator may act as the company’s information technology (IT) specialist, having broad knowledge of a variety of software applications.

System administrators play a critical role in the smooth operation of computer systems at smaller organizations. These smaller organizations often utilize smaller-sized computers and less sophisticated software applications. In many cases, the IT manager of these smaller organizations is responsible for managing both the hardware and the network, although the system administrator may have more input in these matters. A large corporation may employ hundreds of system administrators, all of whom perform different functions, but all of whom must work together to ensure the smooth operation of the company’s computer systems. Smaller organizations frequently hire one person to perform the functions of several different system administrators.
